Hamilton, Ohio – In a stunning victory, Third Eye Brewing has claimed the coveted title of 2024 Grand National Champion at the U.S. Open Beer Championship. The announcement, made on Monday night, July 8th, marks their ascension as the highest point winner at this year’s esteemed competition.
Kelly Montgomery, head brewer and co-owner of Third Eye Brewing, expressed immense pride in their team’s achievement: “I am incredibly proud of our Team at Third Eye Brewing and grateful to see all our hard work recognized. Winning Grand Champion is a dream come true for all of us at Third Eye.”
Established in 2009 by brewer Dow Scoggins, the U.S. Open Beer Championship stands as one of the premier brewery festivals globally, alongside events like the World Beer Cup and The Great American Beer Festival. Notably, it uniquely allows award-winning homebrewers to compete alongside professional breweries.
Despite the accolades, it’s important to recognize that many exceptional breweries choose not to participate annually in such competitions. Nevertheless, the U.S. Open Beer Championship serves as a barometer of excellence within the industry. This year, Third Eye Brewing emerged victorious from a field of over 9,000 entries spanning 170 different styles of beer.
Remarkably, Third Eye Brewing’s success was underscored by their focus on darker beer styles, contrasting with the prevalent dominance of IPAs and pale ales in the craft beer market. Their four gold medal-winning beers include Higher Consciousness (Scotch ale), Double Astral (imperial chocolate oatmeal stout), Dark Aura (chocolate oatmeal stout), and Inner Sight (brown ale).
“We love our IPAs and other pale ales at Third Eye, but we wanted to showcase our prowess in darker styles that have also garnered national acclaim,” Montgomery noted.
Founded in 2020, Third Eye Brewing operates locations in Sharonville and Hamilton, Ohio, primarily serving within the state. Despite its regional focus, the brewery has already made significant waves in national competitions, previously earning the title of Brewery of the Year at the 2023 Great American Beer Festival.
In addition to Third Eye Brewing’s triumph, Monday Night Brewing from Atlanta, Georgia, emerged as the second-highest-scoring brewery at the competition, securing four gold medals and four bronze medals. Noteworthy mentions also include Sun King Brewery from Indianapolis, Indiana, which clinched three gold medals, along with a silver and two bronze medals.
