“Inside Out 2” has officially claimed the title of Pixar’s highest-grossing movie of all time.
Released on June 14, the animated sequel has grossed $1.251 billion in global ticket sales, surpassing the previous record held by “Incredibles 2,” which totaled $1.242 billion, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
This impressive sales figure places “Inside Out 2” fourth on the list of top-grossing animated films, behind “Frozen,” “The Super Mario Bros. Movie,” and “Frozen II.” The film’s position is expected to rise even further.
“Inside Out 2” has dominated the box office since its debut, grossing $140 million internationally during its opening weekend. This performance outpaced “Frozen II’s” $135 million, setting a new record for the biggest animated opening internationally.
The film quickly reached $1 billion at the global box office, making it the first movie to achieve this milestone since “Barbie” last year. Additionally, it is the fastest animated movie to hit the billion-dollar mark.
This remarkable success has made “Inside Out 2” the highest-grossing movie of the year, overtaking Denis Villeneuve’s “Dune: Part Two.”
The sequel features the return of Joy (voiced by Amy Poehler) and her fellow emotions, as they navigate protagonist Riley’s transition into adolescence. The film also introduces a new set of emotions, including Anxiety (Maya Hawke of “Stranger Things”), Envy (Ayo Edebiri of “The Bear”), Ennui (Adèle Exarchopoulos of “Wingwomen”), and Embarrassment (Paul Walter Hauser of “Black Bird”).
“Inside Out 2” currently boasts a 94% score on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, based on 285 reviews nearly a month after its release.
In a four-star review, Digital Spy praised the sequel as “a worthy follow-up that expands the world with brilliant tweaks to the concept, as well as delivering witty gags that simplify big ideas.”
