In a notable recognition for Nigerian music on the global stage, Spotify has crowned Ayra Starr and Tems as the most streamed Nigerian artistes worldwide. This announcement was made by Spotify’s Head of Music for Sub-Saharan Africa, Phiona Okumu, during an event in Lagos on Wednesday.
According to Okumu, Spotify’s global impact list for 2024 highlighted the top 30 artistes who garnered the largest numbers globally. Leading the pack was Rauw Alexandro and Ayra Starr’s “Santa,” followed by Ayra Starr’s “Comma” in second place, and Tems’s “Love Me Jeje” securing the third spot.
Other notable tracks included Luciano and Omah Lay’s “Another Vibe” at fourth, and “Just Like Me” by 21 Savage, Burna Boy, and Metro Booming at fifth. Tyla and Tems’s collaboration “No.1” claimed the sixth position.
The list underscored the global appeal of Nigerian music, particularly Afrobeats, which has captivated audiences worldwide with its infectious rhythms and innovative sound fusions. Okumu highlighted the impact of international collaborations, with eight of the top ten tracks featuring partnerships with global superstars.
She also emphasized the significant contributions of female artistes in the industry, noting Ayra Starr and Tems as leading examples following their recent album releases.
