Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorporated made history at their 71st Boulé in Dallas, Texas, by setting a new Guinness World Record for assembling the most personal hygiene kits in one hour. Guinness World Records representative Mike Marcotte was present to officiate the record-breaking achievement.
During the convention, International President Danette Anthony Reed expressed the significance of the sorority’s accomplishment, stating, “We’re the first Black sorority incorporated, and we’re going to be the first Greek organization to create a service record. We’re going to be the first not only to beat it but to exceed it, ‘cause we’re always the first.”
The assembly took place in a ballroom at the Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center, where 20 tables were equipped with items including washcloths, combs, toothbrushes, soap, sunscreen, and other essential hygiene products. Each table, comprising 26 members with designated roles, efficiently packed a total of 8,500 kits within the hour, surpassing the previous record set by Orange County United Way with 6,136 kits.
Representatives from The Stewpot, a local organization aiding persons at risk of homelessness and supported by the First Presbyterian Church of Dallas, witnessed the event. Partners of The Stewpot, including The Bridge, Austin Street Center, and Family Gateway, also received the hygiene kits.
Reflecting on the collaborative effort, Kimberly Clayton, table 16 captain from the Sigma Sigma Omega chapter in Oklahoma City, OK, remarked, “It’s amazing to see this many Black women coming together for a common goal and being of service to all mankind.”
In addition to the record-setting achievement, the Boulé included the induction of three remarkable women as honorary members of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority. Emmy Award-winning journalist Tamron Hall and New York Times best-selling authors and TV producers Tembi and Attica Locke were recognized for their contributions to excellence and leadership, aligning with the sorority’s founding principles of sisterhood, scholarship, and service to all mankind.
Founded on January 15, 1908, at Howard University, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. continues to uphold its legacy as a trailblazer in community service and empowerment.
