ESPN’s series ranking the top 10 NFL players at each position group saw the New England Patriots notably absent from the first three lists. However, the Patriots broke this streak when ESPN revealed its top 10 safeties, with Kyle Dugger making the cut at No. 8.
Dugger, known for his hard-hitting style and football intelligence, showcased his skills last season with 71 solo tackles, 1.5 sacks, one forced fumble, seven passes defensed, and two interceptions across 17 games. His performance stood out on a Patriots team that struggled to a 4-13 record in the AFC standings.
“He’s always been physical and a smart football player, but he’s become more of a complete player every year,” noted an NFL personnel executive in ESPN’s assessment of Dugger. “He will physically strike you.”
Drafted by the Patriots in the second round of the 2020 NFL Draft, Dugger has steadily improved over his first four seasons, evolving into not just a standout player but also a crucial leader for the team. His role has become increasingly significant amid the retirements of several Super Bowl-winning veterans from the Patriots in recent years.
Heading into the offseason as a free agent, Dugger’s future with the team was initially uncertain. However, the Patriots secured his services with a four-year extension worth up to $66 million, underlining his value and impact in the team’s defensive setup.
