In the southwestern town of Palpite, Cuba, Bernabe Hernandez’s private garden has become a haven for the world’s smallest birds, the “zunzuncitos,” or bee hummingbirds. The wings of these tiny creatures, nearly invisible in their rapid motion, captivate tourists who visit the sanctuary.
Hernandez, 75, has transformed his garden into a sanctuary for the hummingbird, a species found only on the island. His efforts began with the simple act of planting a few trees, which successfully attracted the near-threatened birds. The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) estimates the population of the zunzuncito at between 22,000 and 66,000 individuals.
