Laurene Powell Jobs, the billionaire philanthropist and widow of Apple founder Steve Jobs, has made headlines with her record-setting purchase of a mansion at 2840 Broadway in San Francisco. According to The Wall Street Journal, Powell Jobs spent $70 million on the property, marking it as the most expensive home purchase in San Francisco’s history. This acquisition nearly doubles the previous record set in 2021 when a nearby property on Broadway sold for $43.5 million.
Located on what is famously known as Billionaires’ Row, Powell Jobs’ new residence places her among notable neighbors such as Larry Ellison, co-founder of Oracle, and Jony Ive, the renowned designer formerly with Apple.
The sellers of the mansion were Sloan Lindemann Barnett, daughter of billionaire George L. Lindemann, and Roger Barnett, CEO of Shaklee Corp., a nutritional products company. They acquired the estate in 2011 for $33 million from SF socialite Dodie Rosekrans and her husband John, according to Fortune Magazine.
Over the past decade, the Barnett family undertook extensive renovations under the guidance of architect Peter Marino, transforming the 17,286-square-foot mansion originally built in 1916. Described as “the most beautiful house in America” by Architectural Digest, Marino’s renovations included preserving the mansion’s classic floor plan while modernizing its amenities and opening up panoramic views of San Francisco with extensive new windows.
Despite these updates, some historical features, such as the original smoking room with African sculptures, had to be removed due to deterioration of the grass-cloth wall covering.
Powell Jobs’ new residence in San Francisco adds to her portfolio of high-profile properties across California, including a $94 million home in Malibu purchased earlier this year, as reported by Fortune Magazine. While this purchase sets a new standard for luxury in San Francisco, it remains a fraction of the record-breaking $210 million paid last month for a mansion in Malibu by Oakley founder James Jannard.
