London’s Leadenhall Market has made history by setting a new Guinness World Record for the largest static cycle relay, while simultaneously raising £62,000 for Cancer Research. Organized by Aventum and dubbed the “EC3 Relay”, the event spanned three days and two nights, commencing at 10am on Tuesday, July 9, and concluding at 4pm on Thursday, July 11.
A total of 560 participants took turns cycling on stationary bikes, each covering at least one kilometer within scheduled slots. Together, they amassed an impressive 1,237 kilometers. Aventum surpassed its initial fundraising target of £50,000, emphasizing the community’s dedication to combatting cancer through research.
Matt Field, Aventum’s chief marketing officer, expressed jubilation at the achievement: “We are thrilled to officially hold a new Guinness World Record. This success underscores the incredible unity and generosity of EC3 residents and businesses. The overwhelming response—from cyclists to volunteers—has been truly heartening. I am deeply touched by the outpouring of support and immensely proud of what we’ve accomplished together.”
Field highlighted the broader significance of the challenge, stating, “Our collective effort proves the power of community action in driving meaningful change. Cancer impacts us all, and every pound raised brings us closer to transformative treatments and, ultimately, a cure.”
The event also saw participation from F1 racer Ollie Bearman, son of Aventum’s CEO David Bearman, who engaged in cycling, met with fans, and encouraged fellow participants. Reflecting on his involvement, Bearman remarked, “It was an honor to support such an inspiring cause. The atmosphere was electric, with individuals across the city setting aside competition for a common goal.”
The “EC3 Relay” not only secured a place in the record books but also exemplified London’s community spirit and commitment to making a positive impact in the fight against cancer.
