Keith Boyd, a 57-year-old British-South African, has achieved a remarkable feat by running the entire length of Africa from Cape Town to Cairo in just 301 days, breaking a 25-year-old world record in the process.
Boyd covered a staggering 10,793 kilometers (6,706 miles) across ten countries: South Africa, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Tanzania, Kenya, Ethiopia, Sudan, and Egypt. His journey aimed to set a new benchmark for endurance and resilience, all while raising funds for his non-profit organization, Rainbow Leaders, which focuses on combating poverty in Africa by promoting youth engagement in democracy.
Originally planning to traverse from Cairo to Cape Town, Boyd altered his route due to the unstable situation in Sudan. Starting in Cape Town, he encountered his most challenging segment in Ethiopia, describing it as “hell on Earth.” His progress was hindered by various setbacks, including physical assaults and an attempted kidnapping in Ethiopia’s war-torn Amhara region.
Reflecting on the journey, Boyd shared, “I long viewed the journey from Cape Town to Cairo by foot as one of the toughest and most difficult challenges of mental and physical strength. And I believed that if I could complete the journey in world record time at my age, this might inspire people in a number of ways.”
Boyd, who spent over 30 years in telecommunications in Africa, rigorously trained for four months prior to the attempt, covering 200 kilometers per week to prepare for the grueling physical demands of the expedition. His support team, traveling in a van equipped with camping gear and medical supplies, provided essential assistance throughout the journey.
Despite encountering multiple hardships, including threats from armed assailants and challenges navigating through conflict zones, Boyd remained determined to complete his mission. He negotiated his release from a kidnapping attempt in Ethiopia, eventually reaching Cairo after 270 days on the road.
In addition to recounting his experiences through social media and radio interviews, Boyd plans to document his journey in a book titled Running Africa. His narrative will shed light on the extraordinary challenges faced during his record-breaking endeavor and highlight the urgent issues affecting the regions he traversed.
Keith Boyd’s achievement stands not only as a testament to human endurance but also as a call to action for addressing the pressing socio-economic issues facing Africa today.
