PARIS — On August 7, 2024, Romanian canoeist Cătălin Chirilă made a splash in the men’s 1000 meters single canoe event at the Paris Olympics by setting a new Olympic record. Chirilă, aged 26, dominated the third heat with a time of 3:44.75, earning a top spot in the semifinals.
Chirilă’s performance on the Vaires-sur-Marne course was nothing short of spectacular. His record-breaking time not only secured his advancement but also showcased his exceptional skills and competitive edge. French canoeist Adrien Bart followed closely, finishing second with a time of 3:46.93. Both athletes advanced to the semifinals, while the remaining competitors will have to vie for a spot in the quarterfinals.
The semifinals are set to take place on Friday, August 9, at 12:30 PM Romania time, with the grand final scheduled later the same day at 14:40 PM. Chirilă’s impressive track record includes European championships in Szeged in 2022 and 2024, as well as a world championship in Halifax in 2022.
With this latest achievement, the Romanian delegation has now secured a total of seven medals at the Paris Olympics, comprising three gold, three silver, and one bronze. Chirilă’s performance further solidifies Romania’s strong presence in canoeing and continues the country’s tradition of excellence in the sport.
