23-year-old Tapala Nadamuni from India has set a new Guinness World Record by building the world’s smallest vacuum cleaner, measuring just 0.65 cm (0.25 in) in its shortest axis. This innovative device is smaller by 0.2 cm than the previous record holder from 2022.
Tapala, who previously held this record in 2020 with a 1.76-cm vacuum, dedicated the past two years to reclaiming his title, overcoming two rejected attempts with a completely new design. His vacuum, crafted mainly from a refillable ballpoint pen and small plastic and metal components, includes a tiny rotating fan powered by a four-volt vibration motor to generate suction.
The vacuum’s design, which Tapala developed through over 50 schematic diagrams, includes a power source that allows it to suck up dust particles, which can be emptied after use. Despite challenges in achieving sufficient suction, Tapala’s persistence and inventive approach have led to this achievement.
Spending approximately 20,000 rupees (£181; $238) on the project, Tapala’s creation has garnered admiration from his peers and faculty. He expressed his pride, saying, “All the students in our college were amazed at this tiny vacuum cleaner, and my faculty told me that it’s the most beautiful creation they’ve ever seen.”
