HYDERABAD — In a stunning display of dominance, Syria triumphed over India 3-0 to secure their first Intercontinental Cup title at the GMC Balayogi Athletic Stadium on Monday. The result was a significant setback for India, under coach Manolo Marquez, who witnessed his team being thoroughly outplayed by the Syrians.
Syria set the tone early in the match, taking the lead in the 7th minute. Mahmoud Alaswad capitalized on a defensive lapse from India, toe-poking the ball past Indian goalkeeper Gurpreet Singh Sandhu at his near post.
As the game progressed, Syria’s superiority was evident. They controlled 64% of possession in the first 15 minutes and kept India on the back foot. In the 21st minute, Alaa Dali nearly doubled Syria’s lead but saw his effort narrowly miss the target after a clever dink over Sandhu.
India’s best chance of the first half came in the 28th minute, when Lallianzuala Chhangte failed to convert a cross from Subhasish Bose. Moments before halftime, Sahal Abdul Samad’s attempt to equalize was thwarted by Syrian goalkeeper Elias Hadaya.
The second half saw a more aggressive India, with Chhangte and other forwards creating several opportunities. However, Hadaya continued to shine, making crucial saves to deny India.
Syria effectively ended the contest in the 76th minute when Daleho Irandust scored after a swift run and cut inside the Indian defense. Despite a touch from Sandhu, Irandust’s shot found the net.
India’s efforts to close the gap were thwarted, and in stoppage time, Syria sealed their victory. Mahmoud Al Mawas led a counter-attack and assisted Pablo Sabbag for a close-range finish, adding a third goal to cap off a memorable night for Syria.
With this victory, Syria not only secured their first Intercontinental Cup but also delivered a record-breaking performance, leaving a significant mark on the tournament’s history.
