Australia’s energy landscape is shifting dramatically, as “potential renewables” — the combined output of wind, solar, and hydro — reached a record 102.1% of electricity demand on Tuesday. This peak, recorded at 12:25 PM, surpassed the previous high of 101.5% set last October. While actual renewable generation reached 72.1%, much of the potential was curtailed due to low wholesale prices, which dropped below zero.
The Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO) continues to work on integrating higher levels of renewables into the grid, aiming for 82% renewables by 2030. Notably, South Australia has averaged 75% wind and solar power and aims for 100% renewables by 2027. Records were also set for rooftop solar in South Australia and battery discharge in Queensland, underscoring the rapid growth of renewable technologies in the region.
