YouTube has emerged as the most popular app among smartphone users in South Korea, with users logging the highest hours on the platform globally in August. A recent study by app analytics firm Wiseapp·Retail·Good revealed that 51.2 million South Korean smartphone users collectively watched YouTube for a staggering 117.4 billion minutes last month.
This figure represents the longest time spent on YouTube by users worldwide, according to industry officials.
Among age groups, those in their 20s topped the list, dedicating 27.5 billion minutes to the platform. Users under 20 followed with 15.6 billion minutes, while those in their 30s and 40s spent 21.6 billion and 21.4 billion minutes, respectively. Users in their 50s and 60s logged 17.4 billion and 13.8 billion minutes, respectively.
In addition to YouTube’s dominance, Instagram ranked as the second most popular app for teenagers and young adults, with usage times of 6.1 billion and 7.5 billion minutes, respectively. For users over 30, the mobile messenger KakaoTalk was the second most used app, with a total of 32.7 billion minutes spent chatting last month. Naver, South Korea’s largest online platform, followed as the third most popular app for those in this age group.
