Toronto Blue Jays fans have devoured their way into the record books, setting a new franchise record for the most hot dogs purchased in a single season. The team announced on Tuesday that more than 700,000 hot dogs were sold during this year’s “Loonie Dogs” nights, surpassing last season’s tally of 693,865.
“Loonie Dogs” nights, a popular tradition at Blue Jays’ home games, offer fans the chance to buy hot dogs for just $1 every Tuesday. This season, 12 such nights were held, with an average of 56,541 hot dogs consumed per game. The peak of hot dog consumption occurred on August 6, when fans bought 71,391 hot dogs during a matchup against the Baltimore Orioles.
While this number is impressive, it falls short of the all-time single-game record for hot dogs consumed, which remains 76,627, set on August 29, 2023.
Despite the enthusiastic turnout for “Loonie Dogs” nights, the Blue Jays faced a tough defeat on Tuesday, losing 6-5 to the Boston Red Sox in extra innings. They will meet the Red Sox again on Wednesday before wrapping up the season with a three-game series against the Miami Marlins this weekend.
Unfortunately, the Blue Jays are currently sitting in last place in the American League East, but the fans’ dedication to supporting the team—and their hot dog appetite—has made this season one to remember.
