David Alonso led the Moto3 World Championship practice sessions on Friday afternoon at the Sepang International Circuit in Malaysia. The Colombian rider, competing for the Gaviota Aspar Team CFMOTO, clocked a fastest lap of 2:11.241 on the 3.44-mile track, outpacing 25 other competitors.
Adrian Fernandez, riding for Leopard Racing, secured the second-best time with a lap of 2:11.457. Taiyo Furusato from Team Asia Honda completed the top three, finishing with a time of 2:11.707.
Alonso’s performance marked a strong start to the Petronas Grand Prix of Malaysia weekend. His time not only placed him at the top but also brought him close to the lap record, giving him a 0.216-second lead over Fernandez. The consistent pace set by the #31 rider during the day showcased his momentum from the morning session.
Free Practice began with a wet track, during which Angel Piqueras from Leopard Racing briefly held the top position in the morning session. As the afternoon practice progressed, Fernandez initially took the lead, but Alonso surged in the final minutes, leapfrogging from outside the top 10 to first place.
Ryusei Yamanaka from MT Helmets – MSI continued his strong form, finishing fourth, just half a second behind Alonso. He was followed by Colin Veljers from Liqui Moly Husqvarna Intact GP, who managed to complete over 10 laps. Jose Rueda of Red Bull KTM Ajo claimed sixth place, while Daniel Holgado from GASGAS Tech3 secured seventh.
The midfield was tightly contested, with Holgado narrowly ahead of his teammate Jacob Roulstone, who showed consistent improvement throughout the day. Scott Ogden (FleetSafe Honda – MLav Racing) and Tatsuki Suzuki (Liqui Moly Husqvarna Intact GP) rounded out the top ten.
Notable riders who will need to improve on Saturday include Ivan Ortola from MT Helmets – MSI, who finished Day 1 in 16th place.
