Azerbaijan’s national flag has officially earned a place in the Guinness World Records as the largest flag ever flown.
Afsana Mehdiyeva, a spokesperson for the Baku Boulevard Department, confirmed on Friday that the flag, which measures 36 meters (118 feet) in width and 72 meters (236 feet) in length, now holds the record for its size. The massive flag weighs more than 500 kilograms (1,102 pounds).
The flag was raised at Baku’s National Flag Square, and it was officially recognized by the Guinness World Records on November 6. This marks the second record for the Square, as it was previously recognized for having the world’s tallest flagpole before the site closed for renovations in 2017.
“This new certification is for the size of the flag currently displayed at the Square,” Mehdiyeva explained. “Our flag’s inclusion in the Guinness Book has now been officially confirmed.”
According to Guinness World Records, the enormous flag was crafted by six skilled tailors who spent two weeks sewing it together.
