Chutimon “Aokbab” Chuengcharoensukying, a Thai actress, has made history by winning the Best Performance by an Actress award at the 52nd International Emmy Awards 2024, held in New York City. Aokbab received the prestigious honor for her outstanding performance as the lead character in the Thai film Hunger, which was released by Netflix Thailand.
In Hunger, Aokbab plays Aoy, a gifted young street food cook who is determined to push her limits after accepting an invitation to train under a renowned, yet notorious, chef. The movie explores her journey from working in her family’s modest restaurant to facing the intense demands of the culinary world. After its release in April 2023, Hunger quickly gained international acclaim, ranking among the top ten most-watched international films on Netflix.
Aokbab’s performance earned her a nomination alongside other talented actresses: Andriana Barraze for El Ultimo Vagon, Sara Giraudeau for Everything is Fine, and Jessica Hynes for There She Goes. Reflecting on her nomination, Aokbab expressed her gratitude and excitement on Instagram, describing it as “a dream come true.”
At 28, Aokbab’s victory makes her the first Thai actress to win this prestigious award. In addition to her acting career, Aokbab is a popular model and had her cinematic debut in the 2017 film Bad Genius, which helped establish her as one of Thailand’s most promising actresses.
