GB ultra-runner and women’s rights advocate, Sophie Power, is preparing to attempt a Guinness World Record at the upcoming National Running Show, held at the NEC Birmingham, UK, on January 25-26, 2025.
Power will aim to break the female record for the greatest distance run on a treadmill in 48 hours, targeting an impressive 340.36 km (211.52 miles). Her attempt will commence during the show’s setup on Friday, January 24, 2025, at 14:30, and continue non-stop until Sunday, January 26th at 14:30. Throughout the 48-hour period, Sophie will push her limits, taking only minimal breaks for bathroom stops and limited sleep, as she strives to secure the world record.
A Historic National Running Show
The record attempt will be the highlight of what promises to be the biggest National Running Show in its eight-year history. An expected 30,000 runners will attend the event over the course of the two days. This year’s show will feature prominent speakers such as Sir Mo Farah, Spencer Matthews, Russ Cook (‘Hardest Geezer’), Dame Denise Lewis MBE, Jasmin Paris MBE, and Colin Jackson CBE. The event will also showcase over 250 running brands, offering the latest in running gear, technology, and nutrition.
The world record attempt will be meticulously documented, with footage and evidence submitted to Guinness World Records for official ratification. Additionally, attendees of the National Running Show will have the chance to run alongside Sophie on a treadmill, offering their support. These slots will be available on a first-come, first-served basis.
A Collaboration Between Science and Sport
Sophie’s record attempt will also serve as a unique opportunity for scientific collaboration. Students from Liverpool John Moores University, under the direction of Dr. Jamie Pugh, will monitor Sophie’s physiological responses to this extreme challenge. Their analysis will provide valuable insights into how Sophie’s body adapts and changes over the course of the run.
Sophie Power’s Motivation and Legacy
Reflecting on the challenge ahead, Sophie Power shared, “I can’t quite believe I’ll be attempting this world record live at the National Running Show. I’m very nervous but I know the support will be incredible – and if I need any running supplies they will of course all be on hand! I’m raising money for SheRACES so we can break down barriers to women in sport – so please sponsor me. With this attempt, I’m hoping to inspire other women to take on their own running challenge – whether that’s couch to 5km or their first ultra.”
This is not the first time Sophie Power has ventured into the realm of Guinness World Records. In 2023, she set the record for the fastest time running the length of Ireland, completing the 558 km (347-mile) journey in just 84 hours.
Power gained international recognition in 2018 when a photo of her breastfeeding her three-month-old son during the Ultra-Trail du Mont-Blanc (UTMB) went viral. Since then, she has become an influential advocate for women in endurance sports. Through the foundation SheRACES, Sophie continues to champion gender equality and inspire more women to engage in competitive sports.
