Jonathan Wolfrath, a passionate disc golf enthusiast from the USA, has shattered a world record by completing an 18-hole course in an astonishing 4 minutes 58.76 seconds, setting a new benchmark for the fastest round of disc golf (individual). His remarkable feat in Fridley, Minnesota, was accomplished on a course that traditionally only features nine holes. To break the record, Jonathan sprinted back to the beginning after the ninth hole to replay the course, pushing his endurance and focus to the limit.
Previously, the record stood at 7 minutes 29.87 seconds, but Jonathan’s feat surpassed this by nearly 2.5 minutes, a testament to his rigorous training and determination. Reflecting on the experience, Jonathan humbly admitted, “I don’t really recall the attempt itself. I was in a flow state where I don’t really remember what happened.” Despite the blur of his successful attempt, he emphasized the immense amount of preparation that went into achieving such a time. “I tried to run one fast-paced mile every day for the entire summer leading up to the attempt, in addition to other training,” he shared.
In addition to physical training, Jonathan worked on refining strategies to save time during the course, always keeping the hole in front of him as he moved quickly through the course. His approach to disc golf highlights the accessibility of the sport, which he believes anyone can enjoy, whether alone or with friends. “In the United States, it’s a very social sport, where everyone just hangs out with their friends, drinking and playing disc golf,” he explained.
Disc golf, also known as frisbee golf, involves throwing a flying disc at a target that resembles a metal basketball hoop, complete with a metal tray at the bottom to catch the disc. It’s a laid-back, fun activity that Jonathan enjoys for the camaraderie and personal satisfaction rather than competing professionally.
On breaking the record, Jonathan expressed his joy, stating, “It feels good. I really just want to make my mom proud of me and make sure all my hours on the disc golf course didn’t go wasted.” This humble outlook reflects his love for the sport and his desire to make the most of his efforts.
As for the future, Jonathan is already setting his sights on a new challenge: “Look out for most disc golf holes played in 24 hours. That’s mine.” The current record, held by Michael Sale (USA), stands at an impressive 2,900 holes and has remained unbeaten since 2014. With his new world record under his belt, it’s clear that Jonathan Wolfrath is ready to continue making his mark in the world of disc golf.
