New York, NY – Monty, a 5-year-old giant schnauzer, claimed the prestigious title of Best in Show at the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show on Tuesday. After three consecutive years reaching the final round, Monty’s victory marked a long-awaited triumph. The all-black schnauzer stood out among over 2,500 dogs from across the United States, who gathered in New York City for the 149th annual competition.
Monty, who had previously won the Working Group in the past two years, clinched the ultimate prize this time. His success was met with overwhelming emotion from co-owner Katie Bernardin, who tearfully celebrated the moment in the televised event from Madison Square Garden. “The puppy did the damn thing,” Bernardin said, her voice filled with joy.
In the runner-up position, Bourbon, a 9-year-old whippet, earned Reserve Best in Show. Bourbon, who had previously retired, came back to compete and triumphed in the Hound Group. This was the third time the veteran dog claimed the second-place prize.
The other finalists included:
- Comet, a Shih Tzu and winner of the Toy Group
- Neal, a Bichon Frisé who topped the Non-Sporting Group
- Freddie, an English Springer Spaniel, champion of the Sporting Group
- Archer, a Skye Terrier from the Terrier Group
- Mercedes, a German Shepherd from the Herding Group
The Best in Show winner was selected by judge Paula Nykiel, a renowned breeder and owner-handler with over 50 pointer champions to her name. Nykiel, who was sequestered from the preliminary rounds, made her decision after examining each dog’s conformation, including muscle tone and mouth structure, before observing them run.
As part of the judging process, Nykiel allowed the handlers to take one final lap, inviting them to embrace the moment before walking their dogs at breed-appropriate speeds. This moment of reflection culminated in Monty’s well-deserved victory.
