Demi Moore added another prestigious honor to her awards season streak, winning the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Award for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Leading Role for her performance in The Substance. This marks Moore’s third major award this season, following victories at the Golden Globes and Critics’ Choice Awards.
In her acceptance speech, Moore expressed profound gratitude and reflected on her long journey in the entertainment industry. “This is extraordinary and so deeply meaningful,” she said. “I was thinking about this night, and I realized I hadn’t thought back to when I got my membership to this incredible organization. It was in 1978. I was 15, almost 16. It changed my life because it gave me meaning, purpose, and direction. I was a kid on my own with no blueprint for life. I knew nothing about acting, but I watched, listened, and learned from all of you. You have all been my greatest teachers.”
Moore continued to acknowledge the unwavering support of her team and the importance of continuing to push forward in the industry. “I could not do that without the support of my incredible team,” she said. “As a young actor, it was the casting directors, directors, and producers who got me into the room to audition. Your feedback meant everything.”
Addressing the younger generation of actors, Moore offered a piece of wisdom: “As young actors, it can feel like you have to do it all. But don’t lose sight of the human connection. That is the work we do—to be connected to one another.”
Moore’s SAG Award nomination placed her in competition with Pamela Anderson (The Last Showgirl), Cynthia Erivo (Wicked), Karla Sofía Gascón (Emilia Pérez), and Mikey Madison (Anora). While Moore has already secured multiple best actress wins this season, Madison remains a strong contender following her recent victory at the BAFTA Awards. Historically, the SAG and Academy Award best actress categories have diverged at times, with past winners like Lily Gladstone (Killers of the Flower Moon) and Viola Davis (Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom) not clinching the Oscar despite their SAG triumphs.
Moore’s portrayal of Elizabeth Sparkle in The Substance has drawn critical acclaim since its premiere at the Cannes Film Festival last year. The film follows Sparkle, a former TV fitness star, as she turns to an experimental serum to halt the decline of her career. Moore celebrated the film’s genre in her Critics’ Choice Awards speech, highlighting the often-overlooked depth of horror films. “I am so grateful, not just for my performance, but for the recognition of this genre. Horror films are often overlooked, but they can hold profound meaning,” she shared.
With the Oscars approaching on March 2, Moore’s journey continues to captivate both critics and audiences alike.
