The Volkswagen ID.4 has made an impressive return to the U.S. electric vehicle (EV) market, securing the third spot among the best-selling EVs in January. After a sales surge of over 650%, the ID.4 has quickly climbed the ranks, trailing only the Tesla Model Y and Model 3.
Despite a challenging 2024, when sales plummeted by 55% due to a production halt linked to a recall over faulty door handles, the ID.4 made a powerful comeback in 2025. Volkswagen sold 4,979 ID.4 units in January 2025, marking a remarkable increase of 653% compared to January 2024. To put this into perspective, the company only sold 646 ID.4 models in Q4 2024 and just over 17,000 units for the entire year. At this pace, ID.4 sales could reach nearly 60,000 by the end of 2025.
According to Cox Automotive’s latest EV Market Monitor report, the ID.4 secured its place as the third-best-selling EV in the U.S. last month. It was only outpaced by the Tesla Model Y and Model 3. The Honda Prologue and Tesla Cybertruck completed the top five. Together, these five models accounted for 54% of all EV sales in the U.S. during January.
In total, over 102,200 electric vehicles were sold in the U.S. in January, marking a nearly 30% increase from the previous year. While sales decreased from the record-breaking 132,392 units sold in December 2024, the drop was expected due to typical seasonal trends.
The Honda Prologue, another key player in the market, continued to perform well, with 3,744 units sold in January. Having been launched in March 2024, the Prologue was the seventh best-selling EV in the U.S. in 2024, with over 33,000 models sold.
Volkswagen announced that the ID.4 is now back on sale, aiming to restore the model to its former position as one of the top-selling electric vehicles in the U.S. and Canada. The resurgence of the ID.4 is happening faster than anticipated, showing strong demand for this electric SUV.
The 2025 Volkswagen ID.4 lineup includes the entry-level RWD Pro model, starting at $45,095, and the AWD Pro model, priced at $48,995. Both variants are powered by an 82 kWh battery, offering an EPA-estimated range of up to 291 miles. A 62 kWh battery option will also be available later in the year.
