On March 23, 2025, Canadian athlete Evan Dunfee made history by breaking the men’s 35-kilometre race walk world record in Dundice, Slovakia. The 34-year-old set an outstanding time of two hours, 21 minutes, and 40 seconds, surpassing the previous record by seven seconds, which had been held by Japan’s Masatora Kawano since last October.
Dunfee, who walked alone from the start, maintained a commanding lead throughout the race, finishing a remarkable three minutes ahead of his closest competitor, Germany’s Christopher Linkee. This victory adds to Dunfee’s impressive track record, which includes a bronze medal in the 50km race at both the 2019 World Championships and the 2020 Olympic Games.
The previous world record, set by Kawano, was significant as it was the first to adhere to the new world record standards introduced in 2022. This change aligned with the official designation of the 35km race walk as a championship distance, replacing the former 50km format. Dunfee’s new record marks a new era for the event, further solidifying his reputation as one of the world’s top race walkers.
