Experts from Japan Rail Pass recently unveiled the top luxury train journeys to experience in 2025, compiling a list based on factors like TripAdvisor reviews, Instagram hashtags, and global searches. This ranking highlights the world’s most popular and sought-after luxury train rides.
Justine Lally, Executive General Manager of Marketing at Journey Beyond, expressed excitement over The Ghan’s recognition. “We’re thrilled to share that The Ghan has been named among ‘The 10 Best Luxury Trains Across the Globe’ and also included in TIME Magazine’s annual list of the World’s Greatest Places for 2025,” Lally said.
The Ghan, a 95-year-old staple of Australia’s travel experience, offers passengers a unique way to explore the country’s breathtaking landscapes and remote outback regions. “For over 95 years, The Ghan has been an integral part of Australia’s travel experience,” Lally added.
The coveted title of the world’s best luxury train journey went to Rocky Mountaineer, scoring an impressive 8.88 out of 10. Passengers on this iconic train can marvel at the stunning Canadian Rockies and Pacific Northwest while enjoying regional luxury cuisine served in glass-domed carriages.
Second place was awarded to Napa Valley Wine Train in California. The train features vintage carriages and restored interiors, providing a leisurely journey through vineyards and charming towns.
In third place, GoldenPass Express in Switzerland takes passengers on a scenic ride from Montreux to Interlaken. The panoramic windows allow travelers to enjoy views of lakes and mountains.
Rovos Rail in South Africa placed fourth, offering a luxurious, vintage experience with wood-panelled interiors, fine dining, and Royal Suites featuring private lounges and ensuite bathrooms.
The Ghan rounded out the top five, with its unforgettable route between Darwin and Adelaide through the Red Centre.
Journey Beyond also announced that starting in April 2026, all three of its luxury trains—the Ghan, Indian Pacific, and Great Southern—will feature new Platinum Class Suites. These suites will include personal butlers, personalized bars, queen-sized beds, and en-suites.
Rosina Di Maria, Principal at Wood Bagot, designed the new cabins. “The design is based on understated Australian luxury, with horsehair lighting and corrugated wood finishes,” she said. Additionally, a new Platinum Club will be introduced, featuring dining and lounge areas, including a wine bar with free-flowing Champagne Bollinger La Grande Année.
