In a hundred days, on July 20, FIDE will commemorate a century since its inception in Paris, marking a significant milestone in the world of chess.
FIDE’s centenary celebrations encompass diverse programs tailored for both existing enthusiasts and newcomers to the game, spanning across various demographics including schoolchildren, refugees, inmates, charities, club players, and novices. As part of the festivities, the FIDE centennial torch relay is traversing the globe, with India, Switzerland, and Ghana already participating and numerous other locations worldwide poised to join in.
A groundbreaking initiative for FIDE this year involves a partnership with Guinness World Records to establish a new benchmark for the chess community: achieving at least one million games played within a single day.
FIDE has extended invitations to federations, chess organizers, clubs, and players alike to unite in an endeavor to set a Guinness World Record for the highest number of chess games played within 24 hours. The ambitious attempt is scheduled for July 20, coinciding with FIDE’s official centenary.
To ensure the integrity of each game recorded, the FIDE Arbiters’ Commission will formulate regulations to meticulously oversee the registration, supervision, and reporting of all games, whether conducted online or offline, to the Guinness World Records Office within the stipulated timeframe.
While further specifics will be unveiled on May 1, enthusiasts are encouraged to gear up and participate in what promises to be the largest chess movement globally – FIDE’s centennial record challenge!
