Rolf Habben Jansen, CEO of Hapag-Lloyd, has unveiled the company’s most ambitious strategy yet, aiming to solidify its standing as one of the world’s leading container lines. Termed Strategy 2030, the plan focuses on enhancing customer value, fostering partnerships, and playing a pivotal role in decarbonizing the shipping industry.
“In a dynamic industry characterized by evolving customer needs, a resilient strategy is imperative,” emphasized Jansen. “Strategy 2030 positions us to not only thrive but also lead the way in container shipping.”
As part of this strategy, Hapag-Lloyd will prioritize strengthening its core business of container shipping while concurrently expanding its terminal portfolio and venturing into land transport. The objective is clear: consolidate its position within the top five global shipping lines and bolster its presence in critical markets such as Africa, India, Southeast Asia, and the Pacific trade.
Currently ranked as the world’s fifth-largest container line, Hapag-Lloyd boasts a capacity of 2.05 million TEUs, commanding a 7% share of the global market, as reported by analyst Alphaliner.
The company aims to double down on its quality strategy, with a target of achieving an on-time delivery rate exceeding 80% while reinforcing operational efficiency and customer service. Collaboration, exemplified by the Gemini cooperation with Maersk, will be instrumental in realizing these objectives, alongside internal process enhancements.
Moreover, Hapag-Lloyd is deeply committed to environmental sustainability, aligning with the 1.5°C target of the Paris Agreement. The company pledges to slash absolute greenhouse gas emissions by approximately one-third by 2030 and attain net-zero fleet operations by 2045. To achieve these goals, Hapag-Lloyd will pursue fleet modernization, leverage new propulsion technologies, and embrace alternative fuels.
With Strategy 2030, Hapag-Lloyd charts a course towards continued growth, innovation, and environmental stewardship, solidifying its position as a frontrunner in the global container shipping landscape.
