Olaniyi Adewale, an undergraduate at Federal University, Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE), has embarked on a remarkable quest to set a Guinness World Record for the Longest Marathon Drumming, aiming for an impressive 150 hours using an African talking drum, locally known as ‘Gangan’.
Hailing from Saki in Oye-Ekiti state, Adewale has taken it upon himself to establish this record in his university town, showcasing his dedication to showcasing his talent and creativity through the traditional African instrument.
Acknowledging the ambitious nature of his endeavor, Adewale has infused a creative twist by employing the popular African Talking Drum, adding a unique cultural element to his record-breaking attempt.
The current record holder for the longest drumming marathon is Allister Brown, an Irishman who achieved this feat in July 2023 in Lisburn, Northern Ireland, drumming nonstop for 150 hours and 1 minute. Notably, Brown utilized a drum set for his marathon, distinguishing Adewale’s attempt with the traditional African talking drum.
Adewale commenced his marathon drumming session on Monday and has already surpassed the remarkable milestone of 137 hours at the time of reporting. His attempt has been acknowledged and approved by Guinness World Records, adding an official seal to his ambitious endeavor.
One of the distinguishing features of Adewale’s marathon is the active participation of his audience, who are invited to make song requests, creating an interactive and engaging atmosphere. Adewale has been fulfilling these requests, spanning a diverse range of songs and gyrations by popular composers and singers such as Simi, Emma, Ayo Ajewole (WOLI AGBA), Tope Alabi, and Mayokun.
In addition to entertaining his audience, Adewale has incorporated elements of praise and recognition into his performance, paying tribute to influential individuals such as Khalid Olabisi (Okere of Saki), Mr Macaroni (a prominent Nigerian skit maker and influencer), and Odunlade Adeola (a renowned Nollywood actor), among others.
Adewale’s versatile talent and unwavering commitment to his cultural heritage are evident throughout his marathon drumming session. Despite being a dedicated undergraduate student, he has demonstrated a remarkable passion and dedication to his purpose.
Since Hilda Baci broke the record for the longest cooking hackathon on May 15, 2023, Nigerians have increasingly pursued Guinness World Records in various fields. Adewale’s marathon drumming session stands out as a unique representation of Yoruba, Nigerian, and African culture, showcasing pride in identity and heritage.
Despite the challenges faced by Nigerians, Adewale’s record-breaking attempt exemplifies the resilience and support within the community, proving that they are a people unyielding to adversity and united in celebration of their talents and cultural heritage.
