The Society of Professional Journalists has honored the staff of UATV News with the esteemed Mark of Excellence Award for Best All-Round Television Newscast. This national recognition underscores the exemplary journalistic standards upheld by the UATV News team.
Announced by the national society last week, the award celebrates outstanding collegiate work published or broadcasted in 2023. Among 67 students and staff from 37 universities across the United States, UATV’s submission stood out for its comprehensive coverage, including a noteworthy segment on the aftermath of a tornado that struck Little Rock in March.
Tiffany King, an advanced instructor in the School of Journalism and Strategic Media and UATV faculty adviser, expressed her pride in the team’s achievement. King commended the collaborative efforts of UATV News, highlighting the deployment of three reporters for live coverage in the aftermath of the tornado. Additionally, the producer team worked closely with the executive staff to curate a compelling rundown filled with crucial information for viewers.
The road to national recognition began with UATV News clinching first place in SPJ Region 12, which encompasses schools in Alabama, Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Tennessee. This victory propelled UATV to the national stage, where it emerged victorious as the Best All-Round Television Newscast.
Robyn Ledbetter, an advanced instructor and director of student media at SJSM, commended King’s leadership and mentorship, emphasizing her invaluable contributions to guiding students in real-time broadcasting. Ledbetter praised King’s unique blend of toughness and compassion, which has been instrumental in nurturing students’ journalistic talents.
UATV News, part of the Student Media program, exemplifies the University of Arkansas’s commitment to providing students with opportunities for experiential learning and professional development. The program, housed within the university’s Division of Student Affairs and SJSM, serves as a platform for students to hone their skills in journalism and media production.
In addition to UATV News’s triumph, several other students and student media outlets from the University of Arkansas were honored with regional awards. Notable mentions include Erika Fredericks, Patrick Kelly, Isabella LaRue, Reagan Netherland, Eli Stokes, and the staff of Hill magazine and Arkansas Traveler.
