Honda Odyssey
For those in need of a minivan, the Honda Odyssey is an outstanding option. It boasts a spacious interior with seating for up to eight passengers and a powerful V6 engine that provides smooth performance while achieving 22 mpg combined. Starting at $38,240 MSRP, the Odyssey promises over 200,000 miles of reliable service with just routine maintenance.
“The Honda Civic and Honda Odyssey are two of the most reliable vehicles,” Musson noted. “Their safety features make you feel secure.”
Subaru Outback
The Subaru Outback is a rugged midsize SUV that combines all-wheel-drive capability with solid fuel efficiency, achieving 29 mpg combined. Its roomy interior can carry plenty of cargo, and Subaru’s reputation for durability means the Outback can last well beyond 200,000 miles with proper maintenance.
“Subaru Outbacks are great buys for your money,” Musson said. “The all-wheel-drive standard feature is hard to beat. The interior has a great, user-friendly design. They’re workhorses and will provide reliable service for years.”
Worst Values
Ram 2500/3500 Diesel
While the Ram 2500 and 3500 diesel trucks may appeal to those seeking a powerful vehicle, their high maintenance and repair costs make them poor value choices. Diesel engines require more expensive parts and labor, and not all mechanics are equipped to handle them, limiting your repair options.
“One of the worst vehicles for your money is a Ram diesel,” Musson explained. “The parts on a diesel truck are ridiculously expensive. Not every mechanic will work on a diesel, so your options for repair shops are limited. The parts fail, and you’ll need repairs frequently.”
Additionally, these trucks have poor fuel economy, averaging 15-20 mpg combined, and diesel fuel tends to be more expensive than gasoline, leading to higher ongoing costs.
Land Rover Range Rover
The Land Rover Range Rover is another model to avoid despite its stylish appearance. It has a high starting price of $107,400 for the 2024 model, yet it is plagued by reliability issues.
“Their starting price is high, so you’d expect reliability,” said Musson. “That’s not the case though. They’re one of the least reliable vehicles, and they’re frustrating when parts start breaking down.”
Ford Focus
While the Ford Focus has been a budget-friendly choice for many, its discontinuation by Ford and poor reliability make it a risky purchase, even as a used vehicle. Common issues include malfunctioning electronics and a noisy ride, which can lead to frequent and costly repairs.
“Skip the Ford Focus,” advised Musson. “It’s a budget car to begin with, so at least you’re not spending a ton on the purchase price. However, it’s the kind of car that just has a lot of annoying problems like window electronics that stop working and a noisy ride.”
In summary, the Honda Civic, Honda Odyssey, and Subaru Outback are top choices for their reliability, fuel efficiency, and value retention. In contrast, the Ram 2500/3500 diesel, Land Rover Range Rover, and Ford Focus are best avoided due to high maintenance costs and reliability issues.
