At the 2024 Tony Awards, Dede Ayite made history by becoming the first Black woman to win the Tony Award for Best Costume Design of a Play.
Ayite, previously nominated for her exceptional work on various productions, clinched the award for her contributions to the now-closed production, Jaja’s African Hair Braiding.
Set in a vibrant Harlem salon, Jaja’s depicts the artistry of West African immigrant hair braiders, crafting intricate hairstyles for local women amidst the challenges of being outsiders in their own community. Authored by Jocelyn Bioh, the play garnered five Tony Award nominations.
In her heartfelt acceptance speech, Ayite expressed gratitude to her family, including her brother in Ghana, and her collaborators. She credited Bioh for creating “such a beautiful piece” and acknowledged the invaluable contribution of costume shops and makers, emphasizing their role in bringing the production to life.
Reflecting on her historic win in the Tony Awards pressroom, Ayite described it as “huge,” underscoring its significance for aspiring artists like herself. She encouraged fellow creatives to persevere in telling stories that resonate with them, believing that dedication will eventually lead to recognition.
Ayite emphasized that her achievement was not solely hers but a triumph for the supportive community surrounding her. She highlighted the collective effort that propelled her success, expressing gratitude to those who have cheered her on throughout her journey.
The 2024 Tony Awards ceremony took place at the David H. Koch Theater at Lincoln Center in New York, marking a milestone moment in theater history.
