Italian sprinter and Olympic 100m champion Lamont Marcell Jacobs showcased his form ahead of the Paris Olympics with a strong performance at the Paavo Nurmi Games in Finland, where he broke the 10-second barrier twice on Tuesday to claim gold.
Jacobs, who set a personal best of 9.80 seconds during his victory in the Tokyo Olympics last year and also secured gold in the 4x100m relay, demonstrated his readiness for the upcoming Games. In the heats, he clocked 9.99 seconds to top his heat, followed by a faster 9.92 seconds in the final, marking his second sub-10-second performance since Tokyo.
Reflecting on his achievement, Jacobs acknowledged his initial concern about not achieving a sub-10-second time this season until now. “Before today I was a bit worried that I hadn’t run under 10 seconds yet (this season), but it’s part of the game and now I have done it twice,” he stated.
Analyzing his races, Jacobs highlighted the variability in his performance, noting a strong start in the heats but an average finish, while in the final, the reverse was true. He emphasized the need to consolidate these aspects ahead of the Paris Olympics.
The current season’s fastest time remains at 9.79 seconds, achieved by Ferdinand Omanyala during Kenya’s Olympic trials last Saturday. The athletics competition at the Paris Olympics is scheduled from August 1 to 11 at the Stade de France.
