Declan McFerran, a 20-year-old from County Antrim, Northern Ireland, has added another feather to his cap by setting a new world record for assembling Mr. Potato Head in the fastest time ever recorded. Known for his diverse talents in teaching gymnastics, taekwondo, and piano, Declan achieved the feat with a remarkable time of 5.15 seconds, surpassing the previous record holder, Malaysian record breaker Lim Kai Yi, by 0.28 seconds.
Declan’s journey to breaking the record was marked by perseverance and dedication. Spending four hours straight attempting the feat, he finally succeeded and expressed his surprise and delight at achieving the record. “I hadn’t seen or owned a Mr. Potato Head since childhood, but I was intrigued by the record and gave it my best try,” Declan shared.
The competition for this record saw a resurgence in 2021 when 13-year-old Matilda Walden from the UK set a new benchmark with a time of 5.69 seconds, significantly faster than the previous decade-old record. Lim Kai Yi later added this achievement to his extensive collection of over 60 Guinness World Records titles.
Describing his meticulous technique, Declan explained, “I started with assembling the body, hat, and legs simultaneously. Then, I carefully positioned the eyes with my non-dominant hand while swiftly placing the nose and moustache together in one smooth motion. Finally, I completed the assembly with the ears and arms.”
Declan’s attempt to break various world records was captured in a YouTube video series. While he did not succeed in most of his challenges, he achieved notable success in other attempts, including a pending record for typing the alphabet backwards blindfolded in 4.29 seconds, pending verification, which would surpass the current record by over a second.
Energized by his accomplishment, Declan looks forward to setting more world records in the future. “Breaking this record has ignited a passion in me, and I aim to achieve several more in the near future,” he remarked. “Being a record holder has always been a dream of mine, and this title feels particularly fitting and one of my proudest achievements.”
