As a relentless heatwave persists across northwest India, swathes of the country are grappling with unprecedented high temperatures. According to PTI, maximum temperatures in several regions have soared beyond the “normal” range by as much as 5.1 degrees Celsius.
The affected areas include states and Union Territories such as Bihar, Chandigarh, Delhi, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Uttar Pradesh, all experiencing intense heatwaves.

- 6. Amritsar and Pathankot, Punjab: 45.8°C

A heatwave is officially classified when the maximum temperature reaches at least 40°C in the plains, 37°C in coastal areas, and 30°C in hilly regions, with a deviation from normal of at least 4.5°C. If this deviation exceeds 6.4°C, it is categorized as a severe heatwave.
The India Meteorological Department has forecasted that maximum temperatures in northwest India will remain steady over the next 24 hours, followed by a projected decrease of up to 2°C thereafter.
