LOS ANGELES (KABC) – Celebrations abound as Los Angeles chef Lord Maynard Llera has been recognized as the best chef in California by the prestigious James Beard Foundation.
Owner of Kuya Lord, a beloved fast-casual Filipino restaurant nestled on Melrose Avenue, Llera’s culinary journey began with stints at Bestia, an upscale Italian eatery in the Arts District. During the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, he also operated a successful Filipino pop-up from his home, realizing his long-standing dream of owning his own restaurant with the launch of Kuya Lord in 2022.
Originally from the Philippines, Llera moved to Los Angeles in 2004, bringing with him a passion for the flavors of his southern Tagalog upbringing, which are vividly reflected in Kuya Lord’s menu.
“The menu is the story of my childhood food favorites,” shared Llera proudly.
Highlighted among the restaurant’s offerings are thick slices of slow-roasted pork, golden garlic java rice, and chami noodles, alongside meatless options featuring tofu.
“Finally, people are getting to know Filipino food,” remarked Manuel Dizon, a customer from Hollywood. “It’s about time we hear somebody with great talent to present Filipino food to that community.”
Reflecting on the recognition, patrons echoed their appreciation for the way Kuya Lord elevates traditional flavors.
“I feel like it tastes of home but elevated,” said a diner.
The James Beard Awards, often likened to the “Oscars of Food,” have been honoring culinary excellence since their inception in 1990, with the first award bestowed in 1991. Winners, recognized with a medallion, certificate, and widespread acclaim, embody culinary innovation and dedication.
“Hard work and perseverance really pays off. It means a lot because, you know, it represents us,” expressed Llera. I made, you know, my country proud.
As Kuya Lord continues to thrive under Llera’s vision and passion, his recognition by the James Beard Foundation stands as a testament to the growing appreciation of Filipino cuisine on the global culinary stage.
