Gus MacDonald, owner of Inverness Crazy Golf, orchestrated a marathon charity event that not only raised £10,000 for local charities but also aimed to secure a Guinness World Record. Inspired by the idea of supporting smaller charities in the area, Gus organized a round-the-clock fancy dress mini golf-a-thon.
Upon researching existing Guinness World Records, Gus discovered that the longest verified mini-golf match lasted 24 hours. Undeterred, he decided to push the limits and play for 25 hours straight. Gus has submitted documentation and signatures to Guinness World Records as evidence of his June 22 feat, awaiting official recognition.
The event drew participation from 38 teams, each contributing £100, under clear skies and during the extended daylight hours of the solstice. The overwhelming interest from local charities required Gus to select 24 beneficiaries through a lottery-style draw.
Reflecting on the event, Gus expressed his delight: “We thought it was a brilliant event – everyone seemed to have an excellent time.” He credited the success to the community’s support, from raffle ticket sales to enthusiastic participants playing their hour-long slots throughout the 24-hour period.
The marathon began immediately after Gus completed a full work shift at the course, lasting from 8 am on Saturday to 3 pm on Sunday. “I didn’t stop. Even when I needed to go to the loo, I took my shot and then nipped away quickly while the other player took theirs,” Gus recounted.
Nighttime hours were illuminated with floodlights, and friends and supporters volunteered at the event. Gus highlighted the festive atmosphere, with families arriving in elaborate costumes throughout the night. “It was great fun,” he added, recalling surreal moments such as encountering multiple masks of his own face, creating a whimsical atmosphere akin to “The Matrix.”
Despite uncertainties about meeting Guinness World Record standards, Gus remains optimistic. “I wrote to them three months ago and they never got back to me, so at the moment it is an unofficial attempt,” he explained. Nonetheless, he plans to submit comprehensive documentation and hopes Guinness World Records will acknowledge his achievement.
“The day was an incredible experience, and whether or not we secure the record, it brought our community together for a great cause,” Gus concluded, grateful for the exceptional support and camaraderie displayed during the charity marathon.
