In a surprising turn for the mining town of Tampakan in South Cotabato, known primarily for its vast copper and gold deposits, a new Guinness World Record has been set for the most pedicures given in eight hours. The achievement, which took place during the Tamfaken Lum’alay Festival celebrating the town’s 55th foundation anniversary, saw 160 nail technicians successfully pedicure 1,223 individuals.
Canada had previously held the record since 2015 with 1,083 pedicures, making Tampakan’s feat all the more noteworthy. The record-breaking attempt occurred at the municipal gymnasium, where residents and participants gathered to mark the occasion.
Mayor Leonard Escobillo expressed his gratitude to all who contributed to the successful record attempt, emphasizing the community spirit and cooperation that made it possible. The official announcement was made by Kazuyoshi “Kazu” Kirimura, a Guinness adjudicator from Japan, whose video message congratulated Tampakan on achieving the record: “Congratulations, you are officially amazing.”
Tampakan, classified as a second-class municipality with a population of 41,018 as of the 2020 census, is also recognized for hosting Southeast Asia’s largest undeveloped copper-gold minefield. Despite the presence of this mining project, the town faces challenges related to a provincial ban on open-pit mining since 2010, which has affected the initiation of commercial mining production by Sagittarius Mines, Inc., under a government-approved financial and technical assistance agreement.
The successful Guinness World Record attempt not only highlighted Tampakan’s festive spirit but also underscored its ability to come together for community-driven achievements beyond its mining industry reputation.
