Crafting the world’s most expensive cars involves a blend of cutting-edge technology, innovative design, and unmatched performance. Mate Rimac, a 36-year-old visionary, epitomizes this fusion. At 19, Rimac built his first electric race car, a venture that eventually led him to become the CEO of Bugatti. Today, he introduces the latest marvel from the iconic automaker: the $4 million, 1,800-horsepower (hp) Tourbillon, now one of the world’s priciest cars.
Rimac’s journey to Bugatti’s helm began with his success in creating high-performance electric race cars. He established Croatia’s premier electric supercar manufacturer, producing the $2.2 million Rimac Nevera, the world’s fastest car. This accomplishment, along with his role as a supplier to brands like Porsche and Aston Martin, made him an ideal partner for Bugatti’s foray into electrified vehicles.
The Tourbillon, a product of this Bugatti-Rimac collaboration, is a testament to breaking norms. It features a 1,000 hp V-16 engine for the rear wheels and three electric motors generating an additional 800 hp, resulting in an all-wheel-drive powerhouse capable of 275 mph and 35 miles on electric power alone.
The car’s design is equally groundbreaking, with a wide, dorsal-finned exterior, dihedral doors, and crystalline tail-lamps. The interior eschews modern electronic displays in favor of a high-precision analog instrument cluster, reminiscent of Swiss watch craftsmanship.
The Tourbillon continues Bugatti’s legacy of timeless innovation, echoing legendary models like the Type 57 Atlantic and the Veyron, as well as classics like the 1930s Duesenberg SSJ and the 1960s Lamborghini Miura.
Customer deliveries of the Tourbillon are set to begin in 2026, with only 250 units planned for production. Many are already pre-sold, so prospective buyers should act quickly to secure one of these $4 million masterpieces, plus additional customization costs.
Bugatti’s Tourbillon stands as a beacon of futuristic automotive excellence, pushing the boundaries of performance, design, and luxury.
