Nicosia, Cyprus — In a remarkable display of unity and determination, Cyprus, alongside the Yianis Christodoulou Foundation and Konstantinos Argyros, broke the Guinness World Record on June 25 at the GSP Stadium in Nicosia. A staggering 4,073 participants from across Cyprus formed the longest alternating human chain holding wrists for one minute, surpassing the previous record held by Kyoto, Japan.
The event not only showcased Cyprus’s ability to achieve ambitious goals through cooperation but also highlighted the spirit of solidarity and volunteerism that permeates the island. The initiative, spearheaded by the Yianis Christodoulou Foundation and Konstantinos Argyros, was hailed as a resounding success, marking a historic moment in the country’s history.
Konstantinos Argyros, whose passionate involvement energized the human chain, expressed his deep affection for Cyprus, declaring, “Cyprus holds a special place in my heart; I am always by your side!” His message emphasized hope for a brighter future built on love and mutual support.
The diverse chain included notable figures such as Elpida Iakovidou, Bishop Nikiforos of Kykkos, Koullis Nicolaou, representatives from the Ministry of Education and teachers’ organizations, and prominent business leaders. Participants with special abilities also took part, demonstrating resilience and determination.
John Christodoulou, visibly moved by the event, remarked, “Today, we have proven that it is not the size of the country but the strength of unity, cooperation, and vision that matters. I am grateful to the 4,098 individuals and volunteers who joined us today despite the heat. Together, we have once again placed Cyprus on the international map of achievements.”
Reflecting on the significance of the record-breaking event, Christodoulou emphasized the importance of looking towards the future while remembering the past. “Just as we must not forget our history, we must always strive for unity, peace, cooperation, and strength,” he said.
The event, overseen by official witness Elly Symons from Australia in accordance with Guinness guidelines, concluded with a spectacular concert featuring Konstantinos Argyros. The audience, waving thousands of white scarves, was particularly moved when Argyros, draped in the Cypriot flag, performed the stirring Cypriot anthem “Eleftheros.”
Founded by entrepreneur John Christodoulou, the Yianis Christodoulou Foundation has gained international recognition for its charitable initiatives in education, welfare for vulnerable groups, and promoting Cyprus globally. Breaking the Guinness World Record marks another significant milestone in the Foundation’s ongoing efforts to positively impact society and elevate the profile of Cyprus worldwide.
The event received generous support from various sponsors including the European University of Nicosia, Agios Nikolaos Water, Eurobank Cyprus, the Nicosia Tourism Board, and the Cyprus Chamber of Commerce and Industry. Elly Symons summed up the occasion as “a wonderful and historic moment for Cyprus,” highlighting the participation of numerous young people united for peace on the island.
The record-breaking human chain not only set a new international benchmark but also underscored Cyprus’s spirit of unity and determination in pursuit of shared goals.
