Ottawa, Canada — The Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) has achieved a remarkable feat by setting a new Guinness World Record for illuminating the most landmarks within a 24-hour period. This historic accomplishment took place on April 1, 2024, as part of the RCAF’s Centennial Celebrations, commemorating a century of dedicated service to Canada.
Guinness World Records confirmed that the RCAF illuminated 56 landmarks across Canada and internationally, surpassing the previous record of 38 landmarks set in 2010. The designation of “landmark” by Guinness required rigorous criteria, including recognition by UNESCO, national governmental registers, or significant third-party registries. Each location was meticulously verified with evidence such as timestamped videos, photos of the illuminated landmarks on April 1, 2024, and witness statements.
Lieutenant-General Eric Kenny, Commander of the RCAF, Chief Warrant Officer John Hall, and Captain Aaron Niles were honored with the Guinness World Records certificate during the RCAF Centennial Ball on June 1, 2024, in Ottawa. The ceremony recognized their leadership in orchestrating this monumental achievement, which included illuminating over 350 sites nationwide, ranging from government buildings to private residences, all bathed in blue light symbolizing the RCAF’s colors and national pride.
The celebration extended globally as Canadian embassies and landmarks worldwide joined in, demonstrating international admiration for the RCAF’s century-long legacy of excellence and service. Iconic landmarks such as the CN Tower in Toronto and Parliament Hill in Ottawa were among those illuminated, fostering a sense of unity and celebration across the country.
Col Margaret Jacula, Campaign Manager for RCAF 2024, expressed gratitude for the widespread support, emphasizing the collective effort that made this record-breaking event possible. The RCAF Centennial celebrations will continue throughout the year with various activities highlighting the Air Force’s contributions to national and global peace and security efforts.
“We are incredibly proud to have set this Guinness World Record. This illumination event was a visual spectacle and a heartfelt tribute to RCAF personnel, past and present, who have served our country with distinction,” said Lieutenant-General Eric Kenny. “To see so many people come together to celebrate the Centennial of the Royal Canadian Air Force was truly remarkable.”
