The Croatian Mint has achieved a notable feat by producing the world’s smallest commemorative coin, officially recognized by the Guinness Book of Records. Named after the town of Hum, known as the smallest town in the world with just 52 residents, the Hum gold coin measures a mere 1.99mm in diameter and weighs only 0.05 grams. This tiny marvel features intricate designs depicting Hum on one side and the boškarin, a native Istrian cattle breed, on the other.
Interestingly, these coins also mark a symbolic transition in Croatian monetary history. They are among the last to be denominated in the kuna, Croatia’s former currency which was phased out in early 2023 when the country adopted the euro. The production of the Hum gold coin coincides with a renewed local interest in currency, spurred by the recent opening of the Moneterra Money Museum in Zagreb.
The achievement not only highlights Croatia’s craftsmanship and cultural heritage but also commemorates its transition into the eurozone, making the Hum gold coin a unique and significant piece of numismatic history.
