“Shōgun” Dominates the Emmys
The FX historical drama “Shōgun,” set in feudal Japan and also available on Hulu, has emerged as the most nominated series at the 76th Emmy Awards, securing an impressive 25 nominations, including outstanding drama series.
Based on James Clavell’s 1975 novel, “Shōgun” had previously been adapted into a miniseries in 1980. The recent success of this latest adaptation, both critically and among fans, prompted the network to announce in May that it was planning to extend the saga with two additional seasons.
Emmy Nominations for ‘Shōgun’
“Shōgun,” which aired its first season of 10 episodes between February and April 2024, received nominations across various categories at the 76th Emmy Awards. Alongside the nomination for outstanding drama series, five cast members were recognized for their performances: Hiroyuki Sanada (outstanding lead actor in a drama series), Anna Sawai (outstanding lead actress in a drama series), Tadanobu Asano and Takehiro Hira (outstanding supporting actor in a drama series), and Néstor Carbonell (outstanding guest actor in a drama series).
The show also earned nominations for outstanding writing for a drama series (two nominations), outstanding directing for a drama series, outstanding stunt performance, outstanding casting for a drama series, and numerous technical achievements.
Reactions from the ‘Shōgun’ Cast
Hiroyuki Sanada expressed his gratitude for his Emmy nomination, describing it as “humbling” and a potential “stepping stone for the next generation.” He thanked the Television Academy and highlighted the opportunity to share Japanese culture with a global audience.
Néstor Carbonell also expressed his appreciation, stating he was “honored and grateful” for his nomination and described his role in the series as “a gift in and of itself.”
Comparing the New ‘Shōgun’ to the 1980 Miniseries
The 1980 miniseries adaptation of “Shōgun,” which aired over five consecutive nights, received 14 Emmy nominations and won three awards, including outstanding limited series, outstanding costume design for a series, and outstanding graphic design and title sequences.
Three of the miniseries’ acting nominations went to Toshiro Mifune, Yoko Shimada, and John Rhys-Davies for roles now portrayed by Hiroyuki Sanada, Anna Sawai, and Néstor Carbonell, respectively, in the 2024 series.
The 76th Emmy Awards
The 76th Emmy Awards will be broadcast live on ABC from the Peacock Theater at L.A. Live on Sunday, September 15, from 8 to 11 p.m. ET. The show will also be available for streaming on Hulu the following day.
