The Singapore World Spirits Competition, a significant event alongside the New York and San Francisco World Spirits Competitions, has revealed its top tasting entries for 2024. Winning at these events can dramatically change a brand’s fortunes, as evidenced by Tito’s Vodka’s rise after winning Double Gold in San Francisco in 2001.
This year, the 2024 “Best In Show” bourbon title was awarded to Full Proof bourbon from Barton 1792 Distillery. Here are some key details about the winning bourbon:
Full Proof Bourbon – Vital Stats
ABV: 62.5%
Tasting Notes:
Nose: Berry fruit, with noticeable boozy heat.
Sip: Charred oak, brown sugar, apricot, with a cinnamon spice finish.
Maturation: Minimum of four years in barrelhouses near Bardstown, Kentucky.
Proofing: Proofed down after aging to 125 ABV, the maximum legal entry proof for bourbon into oak barrels.
The aging process in Kentucky’s hot and humid climate causes more water to evaporate than alcohol, increasing the ABV over time. Despite this, Full Proof is not a barrel strength bourbon but is proofed down to its original barrel entry proof.
Barton 1792 Distillery’s Recent Success
Barton 1792 Distillery, owned by Sazerac (also the owner of Buffalo Trace), has been accumulating accolades. Earlier this year, their 12-Year-Old bourbon was named Best Bourbon at the 2024 World Whiskies Awards. Sazerac’s portfolio includes other award-winning brands like Pappy Van Winkle and Eagle Rare, reinforcing their reputation for quality.
Full Proof Bourbon’s Journey
Full Proof was launched in 2016, and the 2023 edition has been lauded as the best iteration to date. The recent recognition in Singapore is expected to increase its popularity and demand. Currently, it can be purchased for around $60 a bottle, but prices may rise following this global acclaim.
Stay tuned for more “Best Of Show” recipients from the Singapore World Spirits Competition, which will be revealed in the coming weeks.
