PARIS – New Zealand successfully defended their women’s rugby sevens Olympic title with a 19-12 victory over Canada in the final.
Canada initially took the lead, finishing the first half ahead 12-7. However, the Black Ferns mounted a strong comeback, with crucial tries from Michaela Blyde and Stacey Waaka securing their win. This victory marks New Zealand’s third Olympic medal in rugby sevens, following their silver medal at the Rio 2016 Games.
In the bronze medal match, the United States claimed their first-ever Olympic rugby sevens medal with a narrow 14-12 win over Australia. With Australia poised for victory, Alex Sedrick of the USA broke away from the defense to score a crucial try. He then sealed the game with a successful conversion.
Great Britain, who were ousted by the USA in the quarter-finals on Monday, finished in seventh place after defeating Ireland 28-12.
