Noémie Fox of Australia made history by winning the inaugural gold medal in the women’s kayak cross event at the Paris Olympics. The competition culminated in a thrilling final where Fox triumphed, followed closely by Angele Hug of France with the silver, and Kimberley Woods of Great Britain securing bronze.
In a heartfelt post-victory interview, Fox expressed her overwhelming emotions: “It’s just been a whirlwind of love and support, and it’s so surreal to be, you know, having this gold medal hang from my neck. Obviously sharing that with my family, my whole team, and my friends that came from Australia as well has been super, super special.”
Hug and Fox, who trained together in Prague before the Games, shared a touching moment of sportsmanship and friendship after crossing the finish line. Hug, thrilled with her silver, reflected on her journey: “It is my first Olympic medal. I dreamed about this since I was four years old, so it is like a huge happiness today. I was so grateful for the 12,000 people here and all the French people cheering for me and the French team. I felt a lot of love.”
Meanwhile, Woods, a favorite heading into the event, secured her second Olympic medal after previously winning bronze in the kayak single. Despite narrowly missing out on gold in kayak cross, Woods maintained positivity: “[It’s] a little bittersweet because I tried to go for that gold. But I was really happy that I’ve come away a double Olympic medalist.”
The women’s kayak cross event captivated fans with its debut at the Olympic Games, highlighting the skill and camaraderie among the world’s top athletes in this thrilling water sport.
