TEAHUPO’O, Tahiti — Caroline Marks added to the United States’ storied tradition in women’s surfing by clinching the gold medal at the Paris 2024 Olympics. The competition, held at the renowned Teahupo’o break in Tahiti, saw Marks secure a narrow victory in the women’s final.
Marks, 22, earned a score of 10.50, narrowly edging out Brazil’s Tatiana Weston-Webb, who scored 10.33. The slim margin of just 0.17 points highlighted the intense competition between the two surfers. This gold medal follows Carissa Moore’s win at Tokyo 2020, marking a consecutive Olympic triumph for American women in surfing.
In the bronze medal match, France’s Johanne Defay triumphed over Brisa Hennessy of Costa Rica with a score of 12.66. The French surfing success extended to the men’s category as well, with Kauli Vaast securing the gold.
Reflecting on her achievement, Marks expressed her elation: “To win the final, you had to get in the barrel, which is what you dream of when you surf Teahupo’o. Overall, I’m really happy. It was an amazing day.”
