Chinese weightlifter Li Wenwen clinched gold in the women’s +81kg category at the Paris Olympics on Sunday, marking China’s 40th gold medal of the Games. This achievement surpasses their previous record set at the London Olympics and establishes a new benchmark for gold medals won at an overseas venue.
At the Paris Olympics, China’s delegation has amassed 40 gold medals, tying with the United States, along with 27 silver and 24 bronze medals, bringing their total medal count to 91.
The Chinese team made significant strides across multiple events. Notable victories include Pan Zhanle’s gold in the men’s 100m freestyle, during which he set a new world record. Zheng Qinwen’s triumph in the women’s tennis singles marked the first Olympic gold in this event for a Chinese athlete. Zheng expressed hope that her victory would inspire future generations to pursue tennis.
In table tennis, the Chinese women’s team, consisting of Chen Meng, Sun Yingsha, and Wang Manyu, defeated Japan to secure their fifth consecutive Olympic gold. This win also represents China’s 300th gold medal in Summer Olympic history.
Sports commentator Deng Bowen highlighted the significance of China’s achievements over the past 40 years, from Xu Haifeng’s first gold in 1984 to the current success of the female table tennis team. Deng attributed these accomplishments to China’s robust investment in sports and the dedication of its athletes.
“For many years, China has been increasing investment in sports, nurturing numerous outstanding athletes who have showcased superb skills and tenacity in international competitions like the Olympics,” Deng noted.
This record-setting performance reflects China’s continued dominance and progress in the global sports arena.
