The world’s most expensive painting may currently be housed in Geneva.
Leonardo da Vinci’s Salvator Mundi, which fetched a record $450 million at auction in 2017, is believed to be in a Free Port warehouse in Geneva, according to a BBC investigation. The painting was purchased by an anonymous bidder, widely speculated to be Saudi Crown Prince Mohammad bin Salman.
The Free Port warehouse is a strategic location for high-value items, as it offers tax benefits; the painting remains untaxed due to its status as an unimported item. It is rumored that the Crown Prince intends to display Salvator Mundi in a future museum in Riyadh. The museum is expected to serve as a major attraction, with the painting as a central exhibit to draw global visitors.
