Babe Ruth’s iconic jersey from his legendary 1932 “called shot” has shattered auction records, fetching a remarkable $24.1 million (€21.5 million) at Heritage Auctions in Dallas. This sale marks the highest price ever paid for a sports collectible.
The jersey, worn by Ruth during Game 3 of the 1932 World Series between the New York Yankees and the Chicago Cubs, became famous for the slugger’s dramatic home run gesture. In the fifth inning of the game held at Chicago’s Wrigley Field on October 1, 1932, Ruth pointed to the center field before hitting a home run off Cubs pitcher Charlie Root. The Yankees won the game 7-5 and clinched the series the next day.
This jersey is not only notable for its historical significance but also for its place in Ruth’s career, being his last World Series and final World Series home run, according to Mike Provenzale, Heritage’s sports department production manager.
The previous record for sports memorabilia was set in 2022 when a mint condition 1952 Topps baseball card of Mickey Mantle sold for €11.6 million. That same year, a Michael Jordan jersey from the 1998 NBA Finals was auctioned for approximately €9 million, marking the highest price ever paid for a jersey.
