WATKINS GLEN, N.Y. (WETM) — Nestled in Watkins Glen, the World’s Smallest Diner, a 32-square-foot establishment, has been serving locals and visitors for the past decade under the management of 83-year-old Gerry Collins.
Collins, who emphasizes the joy of staying active in later years, operates the diner on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays. The menu features specialties like the Coney Island Hot Dog—topped with meat sauce, raw onion, and mustard—and a $3 cheeseburger with cooked onions and pickles.
Due to the intense heat, the diner no longer offers indoor seating, as temperatures inside can reach 120 degrees. Collins has opted to focus on the summer tourist traffic in Watkins Glen, which offers unparalleled foot and vehicle traffic compared to nearby areas.
Customers enjoy the unique offerings, with Syracuse native April Williams praising the combination of sauerkraut, mustard, and onions on the hot dog, and Amy Williams appreciating the inventive menu.
Plans are in place to expand the diner, including the addition of air-conditioned indoor seating and a small dance floor.
